Hi Parents!
I am so excited to start fresh after a great break! I cannot wait to see the kids and hear about their time off! On our first day back, Mrs. Carstens challenged the staff to come up with a word for 2019. I chose the word PRESENT. I will work on being present in whatever situation I am in. This word will apply to my time in the classroom with my students, with my own children, or even when practicing self-care.
Here is what we are learning this week:
Math: Get ready for FRACTIONS!!!! Hang on tight! This week we will start basic with learning about what a unit fraction is and learning the vocabulary. On Monday we will make a small mini book of vocabulary for fractions. Each child will bring this home to use a resource for the next few weeks. Later in the week we will start exploring with fractions on a number line.
Science: In Science we will take a week to launch our Recycling and Conservation unit. On Friday we have a speaker coming to talk about Recycling to the 3rd grade. This will be an introduction to a STEAM challenge that will carry to the end of this school year!
Writing: In Writing we will write about our break, draft some goals for 2019, then we will kickoff our Opinion writing unit.
Reading: In Reading we will do a review of identifying theme and setting in a story. We will also work with a readers theater play in our Storyworks to perform this week. The students will work on fluency and expression this week with the play performance.
This week we will also start a new class read aloud, Mr. Popper's Penguins.
