Hi Parents!
I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend! September is one of my favorite months! I love the comfort of knowing we are settled into our new routine, the hope of cooler weather, and of course college football!
On Friday we met our first grade STEAM buddies for the first time! Each 3rd grader is partnered with a 1st grader from Mrs. Fernandes' class. We plan to meet once a month for about forty-five minutes to engage in STEAM activities. This week the students got to know each other and had to illustrate something they had in common.

Here is what we have in store for this week:
Monday: Labor Day Holiday
Tuesday: Target Day
Wednesday: CoGAt Testing begins (specials in the afternoon)
ILC Lesson with SeeSaw App
Thursday: CoGat Testing (specials in the afternoon)
Friday: CoGat Testing (specials in the afternoon)
Guidance with Mrs. Grindstaff
Math: This week in Math we will work on subtracting within 1000. Students will practice strategies to help them solve and check the problems. We will also work on word problems involving addition and subtraction.
Reading: In Reading we will review character traits briefly. We will also begin reading folktales and fables and learn about the moral or central message of a story read aloud. In 3rd grade we have a daily independent reading time during reading. During this time I meet with students one on one to read. I find out what they are reading, if they are understanding it, and give them goals to work towards. This month I will encourage each student to stick to one book on their level during independent reading until they are done with it. This was a struggle in August but I know it will get better!
Writing: In Writing students are learning how to create a strong lead and use dialogue when writing their narrative piece.
Science: This week in Science we will begin our unit on Rocks and Minerals. This year we have a new workbook resource. Students will more than likely keep this resource at school.
STEAM: Students will also learn about their new STEAM challenge this week. This challenge will take almost the whole month to complete since we will only work on it about once a week for 30 minutes. They will be creating a mineral display case.
Grammar: In Grammar we are reviewing common nouns and proper nouns.
How can you help at home this week:
1. Encourage the same reading behavior as the classroom: ask your child what they are reading, what it is about, talk about favorite books you like to read. We need to instill in them a love for reading!
2. To assist with our narrative writing, talk about what all you did over the long weekend. Ask your child what their favorite activity was and see if they can recount the activity like a storyteller.
There will be no homework on Wednesday or Thursday night due to CoGAT testing.
Have a great week!
