Only 2 more days of testing!!! Thank goodness!!!
We had a productive day on Wednesday without the IOWA test but Thursday and Friday were busy with testing, creating our mineral display cases for STEM, and ILC!
This week you will hear from me regarding a conference time for our October conference week. We try to schedule all siblings back to back. I like to schedule through email to save paper. Feel free to email me if you know you want an early time or if you have a day that week that will not work. I am always at school early in the morning. If you prefer a 7:00 am conference, let me know so I can put you down. Conference Week is October 16th-20th.
Here is what we are learning about this week:
Math: In Math, students are learning to understand what multiplication is (repeated addition, groups of, etc.). This week we will continue with that as we practice multiplication facts. It's never too early to buy a set of multiplication flash cards or get an app for the Ipad to help with this skill.
Social Studies: Students will continue to learn about the Early American Indians on their own as they are researching a region of their choice to become an expert in. They are working in partners and they will produce a typed document about their group. I plan to have these documents up outside our classroom before conferences so you can see their hard work.
This week we will be locating rivers and mountain ranges in Social Studies. We will locate them on Monday and each child will complete a map to use as a study guide for the week. We will have some time to review in class daily but students should study at home as well. Our wonderful room mom, Lynn Gilbert, will put an electronic study guide on our class website as well. The quiz will be on Friday.
Writing: Our new writing program is wonderful but there is not much to report each week. The students are producing excellent narrative writing and are beginning to draft new pieces. I hope the parent journal can serve as a weekly "check in" with your child's writing. Please remember to have someone write back each week and send it in. We TRY to write in it each Friday.
Reading: This week I hope to get back on track with our Reading Workshop model. We have reviewed many important comprehension skills in the past few weeks: schema, questioning, main idea, character traits, and making connections. This week we will work on reading fluency and accuracy and I will check in with each student one on one with their progress.
We will continue to review possessive nouns and hopefully get to some more cursive letters.
