Hi Parents!
We finally made it, a whole week of school!!!  Yahoo!!!
We had a GREAT STEM Showcase Day on Friday!  The students were in new STEM groups and I recruited a couple of parent volunteers!  Everything went so smoothly.  I witnessed some problem solving, creativity, negotiating, and mostly engagement!  Check out the pictures of some groups sharing their final prototype of a tiny school.

Hi Parents!
I hope you are enjoying the long weekend!  We had a great week even though it was a little packed due to being off on Monday.  We worked HARD on fractions this week. (See picture/students creating fraction bars)  Everyone seems to be enjoying the new unit.  Here is what we have in store for this week:
Math:  In Math we will continue with fractions but we will learn to compare fractions and we will learn about equivalent fractions.
Reading:  In Reading we started working through a Coach Book that helps with comprehension and test questions in the Milestone Testing.  We are also enjoying reading Mr. Popper's Penguins!  Throughout this read aloud we will continue to work on new vocabulary and comprehension.  Last week students created reading goals for 2018.  We also started a new segment during reading called "shelfies."  Students bring a book to showcase and share about if they think others will enjoy it, then they place it on a special shelf for others to read.
Writing:  In Writing we are working on our opinion writing unit.  The students have no problem stating how they feel about a topic.  Now we need to add our convincing reasons and evidence.
Science:  In Science we will continue learning about the Regions in Georgia.  This week students will learn about what types of plants and animals live in each region and why.  At the end of the week they will choose one of the regions to illustrate on a poster to label, write about, and I will display them in the hallway.
Grammar:  We will learn about idioms this week in Grammar.

Week in Review:
Monday: MLK Day/No School
Tuesday:  Target day
Wednesday:
Thursday:  ILC
Friday:  Make up Guidance lesson with Mrs. Edwards/Parent Reader

Enjoy the weekend!

 Hi Parents!  Happy New Year!
We had a great couple of days last week getting back into the swing of things.  I enjoyed my half birthday celebration, the kids enjoyed their writing celebration, and we started our new read aloud.
On Monday we will start a new behavior management system for our class.  I will no longer use the tiger tale in our class.  I struggled with using it for the first half of the year as I do not enjoy calling students out and marking for negative behavior.  I've always believed in positive discipline in the classroom and I want to consistently reward students who are doing what they need to be doing and working hard.  So on Monday every student will get a punch card with 20 spots, sort of like a frequent buyer card.  During pack up each afternoon I will walk around and punch cards based on the day.  When the students have all the slots punched in their card, they can choose a pass they want:  homework pass, lunch in the classroom, etc.  I pitched the idea to the class on Friday and they were excited.  The punch cards are small so I look forward to not wasting so much paper with a weekly tiger tale for each student.
Here is what we are learning this week:
Math:  This week we will begin fractions.  We will learn to represent fractions in different ways and identify fractions.  We will talk about the vocabulary with fractions as well.
Reading:  In Reading, students will create individual reading goals for the new year.  We will talk about taking reading counts quizzes for comprehension, reading on their current reading level, building stamina with independent reading, and increasing reading fluency.  We will also work on vocabulary and comprehension with our read aloud, Mr. Popper's Penguins.
Writing:  In Writing we are starting our Opinion writing unit which is more like a persuasive writing unit.  We will brainstorm problems we see in our school, neighborhood, community, etc. and come up with solutions to solve these problems.
Science:  In Science we are reviewing the regions of Georgia.  This week we will learn about the plants, animals, habitats, and adaptations of those regions.
Social Studies:  This week in Social Studies we will learn about British Colonial America.
Grammar:  We will review adjectives so that we can begin to use superlative adjectives.
Week in Review:
Monday:  Guidance with Mrs. Edwards, GO DAWGS!!!!
Tuesday:  Target Day
Wednesday:
Thursday:
Friday:  Parent Reader

Have a great week!
Mrs. Adams
