Hello Parents!
This past week went by so quick with the Monday holiday and testing. I am so thankful we get a few days off from testing before we start back with IOWA on Thursday of this week. Please note that the students will have homework at the beginning of the week since we have a break from testing. Also, I'm attending a training on Wednesday of this week, it will be off campus. We are fortunate to have Mrs. Bourg with us all morning so the day runs as usual when I am out. Week in Review: Monday: Tuesday: Target Day Wednesday: Mrs. Adams out Thursday: IOWA testing Friday: IOWA testing Here is what we are learning this week: Math: We will review subtraction strategies and take an assessment on subtraction within 1,000 at the end of this week. We will also review word problems with addition and subtraction. We are working on 2 step word problems. Science: The students were so excited to start our unit on Rocks and Minerals. We will continue this unit this week. Writing: This week we will learn how to use dialogue correctly when writing our narrative pieces. We will also work on using transition words in our writing. Reading: In Reading we will work on identifying the theme and moral of a story. In Grammar we will review pronouns, proper nouns, and abstract nouns. How can you help at home? *Return the permission form for our Tellus field trip in October, please be sure to flip to the back for a lunch choice. *Make sure your child is working on the book report due next week. *Make sure your child is reading for 20 minutes each day. Check in with them on what they are reading and be sure they are sticking to a book they enjoy or read a chapter book together. *This week I hope to get a letter home inviting you to join our class SeeSaw account. You will be able to see your child's digital work and comment on it. Hope everyone has a great day! Joni Hi Parents! I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend! September is one of my favorite months! I love the comfort of knowing we are settled into our new routine, the hope of cooler weather, and of course college football! On Friday we met our first grade STEAM buddies for the first time! Each 3rd grader is partnered with a 1st grader from Mrs. Fernandes' class. We plan to meet once a month for about forty-five minutes to engage in STEAM activities. This week the students got to know each other and had to illustrate something they had in common. Here is what we have in store for this week:
Monday: Labor Day Holiday Tuesday: Target Day Wednesday: CoGAt Testing begins (specials in the afternoon) ILC Lesson with SeeSaw App Thursday: CoGat Testing (specials in the afternoon) Friday: CoGat Testing (specials in the afternoon) Guidance with Mrs. Grindstaff Math: This week in Math we will work on subtracting within 1000. Students will practice strategies to help them solve and check the problems. We will also work on word problems involving addition and subtraction. Reading: In Reading we will review character traits briefly. We will also begin reading folktales and fables and learn about the moral or central message of a story read aloud. In 3rd grade we have a daily independent reading time during reading. During this time I meet with students one on one to read. I find out what they are reading, if they are understanding it, and give them goals to work towards. This month I will encourage each student to stick to one book on their level during independent reading until they are done with it. This was a struggle in August but I know it will get better! Writing: In Writing students are learning how to create a strong lead and use dialogue when writing their narrative piece. Science: This week in Science we will begin our unit on Rocks and Minerals. This year we have a new workbook resource. Students will more than likely keep this resource at school. STEAM: Students will also learn about their new STEAM challenge this week. This challenge will take almost the whole month to complete since we will only work on it about once a week for 30 minutes. They will be creating a mineral display case. Grammar: In Grammar we are reviewing common nouns and proper nouns. How can you help at home this week: 1. Encourage the same reading behavior as the classroom: ask your child what they are reading, what it is about, talk about favorite books you like to read. We need to instill in them a love for reading! 2. To assist with our narrative writing, talk about what all you did over the long weekend. Ask your child what their favorite activity was and see if they can recount the activity like a storyteller. There will be no homework on Wednesday or Thursday night due to CoGAT testing. Have a great week! Mrs. Adams Hi Parents!
Here is what you need to know for this week: I know Math was a bit overwhelming this week! Thank you for sticking with it and encouraging your child to try the different strategies. In 3rd grade we will introduce and expose the students to many different strategies with different concepts. However, they will be able to use the strategy they are most comfortable and successful with. MANY students will get their final punch in their punch card this week! This means they will choose a classroom pass of their choice. I hope you will celebrate with them at home as well. They will start a new punch card once they finish the one they are on! I am so proud of their great behavior! Monday: I will be out of the classroom attending a leadership meeting Tuesday: Target Day Wednesday: Early Release Day! Our schedule is different, shorter, and just a little bit off on Early Release Days. PLEASE let me know if your child is going home a different way than their normal schedule on Wednesday. Thursday: ILC: We will have an introduction with the SeeSaw app. I will send home more information on See Saw so you can view some of your child's work at home. Friday: STEAM Buddies! On Friday we will partner with our first grade STEAM buddies in Mrs. Fernandes' class. Here is what we are learning this week: Math: This week in Math we continue working with addition within 1000. Students will practice problems using the 2 strategies they like best. Additionally, we will work on addition word problems. On Thursday students will take an addition assessment. On the assessment they will have to show the 2 strategies they use to solve and check an addition problem. Social Studies: We finished our Civics unit and we will learn about Saving, Spending, and Opportunity Cost this week. Next week we will move into our first Science unit. Writing: In Writing, students have started writing their first narrative piece. We are reviewing the writing process and students have a writing partner to assist them with editing and revising. We will continue working on our narrative pieces this week. Students have a one on one time to conference with me about their writing piece. Grammar: In Grammar we are learning to identify abstract and concrete nouns. Reading: Last week in Reading I introduced the RACE acronym: R: Restate the Question A: Answer the Question C: Cite the Text E: Explain We are learning to answer questions from a text using this acronym. This week we will continue to work on our responses to questions from a text. We will also review identifying character traits from a character in a story. Vocabulary Binder: Each student has a vocabulary binder and we learn 5 words a week. After learning the words, definitions, and using the word in a sentence, we spend the rest of the week identifying concepts such as: prefix, suffix, root word, synonyms, and antonyms. How can you help at home this week: Help your child feel successful with the 2 addition strategies they like the best. Provide them more problems to practice with using the strategies if they need it to prepare for the assessment on Thursday. As you can tell, we are very busy in third grade! The students continue to do great and I am excited to watch their growth this year! All the Best, Mrs. Adams Hi Parents!
Here is what we are learning this week in 3rd grade: Math: This is a busy week in Math! We will be learning addition strategies so we can successfully add within 1,000. Each day I will introduce 1 or 2 strategies to help students solve and check addition problems. The ultimate goal is for students to feel confident using 2 of the strategies by the end of the week. We will spend 2 weeks practicing these strategies in isolation, so if it feels overwhelming, we will review a lot next week in small groups. Reading: The students will receive their first issue of a Storyworks Junior magazine this week! I LOVE these magazines and the resources I get with each issue. Each issue is usually for a 2 month period and then the students will bring them home. I encourage you to read through the magazine with your child when it comes home and see what articles they enjoyed the most. This week we will work with the feature article, a non-fiction piece, and work on using a text to find answers to questions. Writing: The students will begin writing their first small moment narrative piece. I know they are ready to begin writing and I am excited to see their growth this quarter! Social Studies: This week we will wrap up our unit on being a good citizen and we will move into opportunity cost. Grammar: In Grammar so far we have reviewed Nouns, Plural Nouns, and Pronouns. This week we will spend some time reviewing. What you need to know for this week: Thursday is picture day! On Friday we will have our first Guidance lesson with Mrs. Grindstaff. I met with our fabulous Room Moms and they will contact the class after the Tritt Room Mom Orientation on Wednesday. Have a great week! Mrs. Adams Hi Parents!
It was a great full week of school in third grade! It was nice to jump into our academic schedule and start our routine. We were able to get through our place value unit and we officially started our reading workshop model. Here is our week in review: Monday: Media Center Orientation (Yay! Now we can check out books on a regular basis!) Tuesday: Target Day (Target students report to Mrs. Walker's room) Wednesday: Thursday: I will meet with our Room Moms so you will hear from them shortly after! Friday: Here is what we are learning about this week: Math: In Math we will learn how to round to the nearest 10 and 100. During Guided Math students will have a place value review or challenge center and then work on rounding skills and practice. Every Friday we will have a timed test (addition for now) and usually a post assessment on the standard/skill for the week. I plan to send home the graded assessment on Monday. Social Studies: This past week we launched our Social Studies unit and this week will continue learning about Civics and then move into Government. Writing: In Writing we will begin our Narrative Unit and learn how to write about small moments. Reading: In Reading we will work with a book, Rain School. We will learn to ask questions when reading a new text, read fluently with expression, and learn to find answers to questions in a text and provide evidence. Additionally, I will continue to meet with students one on one to check their current reading level. We will also start a new vocabulary binder and this will become a part of our daily reading workshop. Grammar: In Grammar we will review pronouns. What can you do at home: *Make sure your child is reading 20 minutes each day. *Make sure they understand the Math homework each day. *Practice rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100 while riding in the car or at dinner. I know we will have another great week! Hi Parents! What a great few days! We all enjoyed getting to know each other and the kids loved hearing about all of the fun and learning that will take place this year in 3rd grade! I look forward to telling you all about it as well at Open House on Tuesday night. There are 2 sessions that are exactly the same: 6:30 or 7:30. This is for parents only. The pictures above are from this week as we played a "get to know you" game, laughed as a class mate was trying to pop a balloon (everyone got a turn and it was funny every time), and we ended the week enjoying Sofia's birthday treat outside! Happy Birthday Sofia!!!! Here is what we have in store for this week: Math: Each day we will start our day with specials and then jump right into Math. This week I hope to establish Guided Math expectations and get the ball rolling. We will begin learning about place value. Students will review the foundation of number sense with larger numbers and ways to represent numbers. Yes, there will be math homework this week! Science, Social Studies, and STEAM: This week we will review the Engineering Process and work together to complete our first short and sweet STEAM Challenge in our STEAM groups. Then we will launch into our Social Studies unit by understanding what Social Studies is. Writing: In Writing we will begin our Narrative unit by reviewing what a narrative is, writing a pre-assessment so we can look at our growth in 8 weeks, and start our Parent Journal. Reading Workshop: This week will be busy in Reading as we learn about the Reading Workshop model. I will be pulling students one on one during the reading block to assess their current reading level. We will also take the Reading Inventory this week to get an updated Lexile Level. Grammar: In Grammar we will begin our interactive journal starting with Nouns and Plural Nouns. What you can do to help your child this week: 1: Check the folder each night for homework that is due the next day. 2: Encourage your child to bring a favorite book (or 2) to school this week since we cannot check out books until the following week. We will have some independent reading time each day this week. Each child has a "book box" and they can keep the books at school for reading all week if they want. 3: Your child will write in their planner every day (except for Friday) and bring it home. Try to get in a habit of reading over it with them each afternoon. Hope to see you all on Tuesday evening! All the Best, Mrs. Adams Hi Parents!
I am so excited for the first day of school! We are going to spend the next 3 days getting to know each other. I am a firm believer in building a classroom community. If we can learn to work together, accept each other, and follow routines and procedures, we will maximize our learning time in the days ahead! I hope your children come home excited for 3rd grade, it certainly is a fun year with so much growth! I cannot wait to tell you more at Open House THIS Tuesday night. This is for parents only.
